Wear Pink—Without Causing Pain

I’m starting to see pink everywhere, which can mean only one thing: It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every October, more and more companies sell pink clothing, jewelry, flowers, food, books, back scratchers, toilet plungers, pogo sticks, kitchen sinks, and just about everything else under the sun to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds for breast cancer charities. Since one of my best friends is a breast cancer survivor—and an awesome activist who went vegan after her mastectomy and credits her healthy diet with keeping her cancer-free for more than 17 years—I don’t really mind that companies go overboard with breast cancer awareness merchandise.

The problem is, many of the charities that benefit from the sale of all this pink merchandise fund cruel and irrelevant experiments on animals. As I mentioned in a previous article about breast cancer charities, there are too many physiological differences among rats, rabbits, dogs, cats, pigs, and people for researchers to learn anything meaningful about one species by studying another.

The Love/Avon Army of Women has the right idea though. It’s recruiting women to participate in research that could help eradicate breast cancer—and none of the research participants are harmed either. The charity is selling a pendant to benefit its work—if you can’t volunteer for the studies, perhaps you’d want to support them by buying a necklace?

Or you can proclaim your support for women—and your opposition to animal experimentation—a little louder in peta2 and Keep A Breast’s raspberry pink “Breasts, Not Animal Tests” tunic tank top (and try your luck at the game). (Order PETA’s “Cut Out Animal Experimints” lip balm to go with it, and not only will you be helping animals, you’ll also be looking fine!)

Just about everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer and wants to stop all the pain and suffering it causes. We can all help achieve this goal by supporting charities that focus on prevention and humane research methods—not animal experiments.

Please take a minute to send an e-mail that will go to the executives of the organizations that fund animal research. Ask them to stop funding animal experiments and to support scientifically sound and humane research that can stop breast cancer before it starts.

  1. George Sidoti Says:

Please stop funding/supporting animal experiments and to support scientifically sound and humane research that can stop breast cancer before it starts.

  2. Jill Dains Says:

PLEASE stop funding animal experiments and support scientifically sound and humane research that can stop breast cancer before it starts.

I want to support the research but cannot support needless animal suffering/testing.

  3. Maria Maloney Says:

No animal experiments. There has to be some alternative to be able to find results for sickness.

  4. Barbara Parker Says:

As a breast cancer survior and mother and grandmother of 6 girls please stop funding that causes animal suffering. Thank you.

  5. sara Says:

Keep up the good work PETA! :)

  6. Merryl Goldman Says:

Stop killing or torturing animals. There are other ways to cure Cancer, but not at the expense of other species!!

  7. Doreen Gallien Says:

PLEASE stop funding animal experiments and support scientifically sound and humane research that can stop breast cancer before it starts.

I want to support the research but cannot support needless animal suffering/testing.

  8. Matthew R Says:

Breast cancer awareness month was created by a major pharmaceutical company to control what information the public are given about cancer prevention and treatment. They promote mammograms which are X- rays/radiation and CAUSE cancer. This company sells the cancer drugs this way. Insurance companies pay for these treatements because they are given tons of shares of stock when a new pharmaceutical company goes public. They will never pay for truly preventative or natural mineral or vitamin supplementation because it cuts into their profits.

    It is a total scam.

I DO NOT wear pink in October.

However, I do work with a charity that educates people about ways we find in observation, at a high success rate, seem to eliminate most cancers, even terminal ones. It was founded by a pancreatic cancer survivor, who was diagnosed in 1976 but is alive and healthy today. He worked on surgical transplant work and used this formula to extended the preservation time of organs for transplant from 3 days up to 24 days - it was a Proctor and Gamble grant and they fudged his data down to look like 5 days in order to secure grants. He complained, they told him it was a business and that if he acted up they would pull his medical license, so he quit medical school and now works to promote natural mineral supplementation - no animal testing, just observe the results and testimonials from the website… I’m convinced, that’s all the research on cancer that I feel is necessary. I personally know 6 people who used this and are fine and OK today, no one i know took it and died. However, everyone i know who took chemotherapy is now dead.

Joe P. had Pancreatic, Stomach, Liver, Neck
    and Throat Cancer Simultaneously;
totally natural approach used, no chemo
& no surgery - showed ‘No evidence of cancer’.

  11. Mrs. Joan Squires Says:

There are so many alternative tests (eg.human tissue) etc. that can be used in cancer research.
Testing on animals does not bring useful info
that can be applied to humans. This is a proven
fact! Research money is precious and should be
put to better use. Stop useless animal tests!

  12. Dr. Carole Edmonds Says:

    Dear Researchers,
No one wants a cure for breast (and all forms of) cancer to be found more than I. It is so important to me,however, that it be done without the needless use of animal testing. There are more reliable, more cost effective and more humane ways to accomplish said goal.
Also research is a wonderful thing, but prevention is key. For example, I have become vegan (and organic at that)as a result of the connection between the hormones livestock are fed and cancers (particularly of the reproductive and mammary system). I exercise daily and work to reduce stress in my life like yoga and reiki. For the first time in my life I feel like I am actually doing something proactive to prevent cancer rather than worrying about getting cancer.
    Thank you,

  13. Anne Birthistle Says:

You don’t have to be cruel to be kind.
    Please only donate to cruelty-free,
cutting edge medical charities that carry
    the HumaneSeal.org guarantee of compassionate
    scientific inquiry.

  14. Michael Myrick Says:

Ironically, my girlfriend broke up with me, largely due to the fact I do not and will not support the Susan B. Koleman foundation, or any other organization, for the cruel animal testing and experiments they do. Obviously, I’m better off without such a short-sighted person. Some people just can’t handle the truth about such brutal experiments conducted on innocent and beautiful animals. Love you PETA!

  15. Danielle Says:

I have sent the email and just received a reply stating that the FDA requires the testing on 2 different animals to approve any pharmaceutical product. Shouldn’t we be targeting the FDA to change their criteria???
If they changed their criteria then corporations would not be required to test on animals, then those that carry on testing are obviously the ones who couldn’t give a hoot.
But then as the FDA approved such dangerous chemicals as Aspartame that caused holes in the brains of rats and many other dangerous vaccines and drugs that had negative effects on animals, do they take notice of these animal tests anyway?

  16. Leigh Says:

Why make even more living creatures suffer!

  17. sonia camara Says:

Please, stop testing on animals. Their suffering is useless. Use human volunteers.

  18. Donna Miller Says:

Please stop experimenting on animals. There are many other humane research methods.

  19. chander kumar soni Says:

    excellent.

  20. Diana Says:

Stop animal testing, stop the suffering of another criatures, don’t be selfish.
Pain is pain no matter what. Animal or human.

  21. pat meador Says:

I am a breast cancer survior. I do not approve of experimenting on animals. Please stop.

  22. Daphne Smithard Says:

Stop cruel animal testing. Use humans instead. Animals cannot speak for themselves and they suffer tremendously through painful testing and spending their lives in laboratories. Through being a member of ‘Beauty without Cruelty’ in South Africa and now Peta in Canada, as well as being a vegetarian, I cannot stress enough that this cruelty must end. Fortunately many cosmetic/cleaning product manufacturers have stopped this practice, but there’s still a long way to go.

  23. Devin Says:

One life is not more important then any other. To kill an animal to save a human solves nothing and ends in a stale mate. Especially given that the animal was healthy to begin with and was forced to participate.

  24. giovanna Says:

PLEASE stop funding animal experiments and support scientifically sound and humane research

  25. Linda Says:

If your company funds animal research I will not support your efforts until you stop. There really is not a need to use animals … you haven’t found a cure yet using animals what makes you think one will be found. Start thinking and using other methods.
Also if your a publically traded company I will not buy your stock until you stop.

  26. Julie Cohen Says:

Please stop funding animal experiments and use alternate humane means of testing.

  27. Tiffany Colasuonno Says:

There are other ways in which breast cancer research can be done without causing or inflicting pain upon innocent animals. Please reevaluate the ways in which you can stop and prevent breast cancer.
These evil experiements on animals must end ASAP!

  28. Amy Says:

I do not approve of experimenting on animals. It is cruel.

There are many, many alternatives to finding a cure for diseases such as cancer.

Using human cells is one of the most progressive ways.

I do not support or donate any money to non-profits who do animal testing.
