Win a $200 Gift Certificate From Bettie Page Clothing
Yo, Daddy-O! We have a peachy keen prize to offer you from the fabulous retro-clothing retailer, Bettie Page Clothing. One lucky winner will snag a $200 gift certificate for its online store!
As if that news weren’t terrific enough on its own, it is also pretty stellar to note that even though the company has to-die-for fashion, no animals actually had to die for any of Bettie Page Clothing’s designs. All its designs are fur- and leather-free, so you can buy with confidence.
Now is your chance to win. Just leave a short comment below telling us about your favorite animal-friendly fashion item. One winner will be chosen at random.
The contest ends on May 22, and we’ll contact the winners by May 27. Be sure to read our privacy policy and our terms and conditions, as you’re agreeing to both by commenting. Good luck!

April 28th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Second-hand shoes from the thrift store <3 I have a pair of 1930’s boots that are easily the best pair of shoes I’ve ever bought. And for the meager price of three dollars (party!).
April 28th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
My favorite animal friendly fashion item is my non-leather vinyl purse. I get to wear it every day and every time I get a compliment on it, I mention that it’s not leather, so no animal had to die for me to have it! =)

hi,i am from india,i dont use any product which is made by using our friend animal, for example i will buy a cosmetic product totally which is prepared by not using animal products,
so how can i judge whether a cosmetic product is animal free or not,
By reading the ingredients on it …..
A list of animal based ingredients you might find in your make up, shampoo or other beauty products would include:
* Vitamin A, which can come from egg yolk or fish liver
* Animal Fat, which can be found in soap
* Beeswax
* Bristle, which is animal hair used to make brushes - often for make up brushes
* Chitin, comes from the hard shells of insects or crustaceans (like crab or shrimp) and is used in moisturisers and shampoos
* Collagen is used in moisturisers and is derived from animal connective tissue
* Elastin is a protein found in the muscles of animals and is used in cosmetics
* Fish oils are sometimes used in cosmetics
* Glycerine (Glycerol) can come from sugar fermentation but is sometimes derived from animal fats. It’s used in some toothpastes.
* Honey is sometimes used in cosmetics
* Keratin is often used in shampoos and conditioners. It’s a protein found in fur, feathers, hair, hooves and horns.
* L’Cysteine Hydrochloride is derived from chicken feathers or hair. It’s sometimes found in shampoo, but can be manufactured synthetically.
* Lactose is used in some cosmetics. It’s milk sugar, usually from cows.
* Lanoline is the fat extracted from sheep wool, often used in cosmetics
* Musk, used in perfume. It comes from oil harvested from a gland taken from musk deer, civet cats and beaver.
* Oleic Acid is used in soap and other cosmetics. It’s a fatty acid that can come from vegetable or animal fats.
* Oleostearin is a solid fat derived from tallow and is found in soaps
* Oestrogen is used in creams and other cosmetics. It is the female sex hormone and usually comes from horse urine or cow ovaries.
* Progesterone is another sex hormone found in creams and comes from animal tissue
* Propolis, comes from bee hives and sometimes found in toothpastes and other toiletries
* Royal Jelly, which comes from bees and is used in cosmetics
* Sable is the fur of the Sable Marten and used in make up brushes
* Shellac is used in hair spray and lip sealer for shine. It is an insect secretion.
* Sponge is often artificially produced but can come from the skeletons of sea animals
* Squalene comes from shark liver and is used in cosmetics and toiletries
* Stearic Acid, also used in cosmetics and toiletries is derived from the fat of sheep, cows or pigs, though a synthetic alternative is available
* Spermaceti Wax is found in toiletries and cosmetics and is a waxy oil that comes from the head of the sperm whale and also from dolphins
* Tallow is a hard fat taken from the kidneys of sheep and cattle. It’s used in soap and other cosmetics.
* Urea is fairly common in creams and other cosmetics. It comes from the livers of various farmed animals.
* Wax is used in some cosmetics and can come from plants or animals
So i dont at all purchase that product even if i found any single ingredient which is prepared from animals.
Thats it if all of them like me start not purchasing such a kind of products, the companies will turn their business towards preparing animal friendly products, thus we can save animals
April 28th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

April 28th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
My favorite cruelty-free fashion item is: ME! I don’t eat or wear anything with animal products in them. I also make sure everything I buy was not tested on animals. To me, living a cruelty-free lifestyle is always fashionable!
April 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Having an rabbit as a pet opened my eyes more then I could imagine. I’ve cut back on everyday products that do animal testing and I’ve cut off fur from my fashion list. Faux fur is just fine for me I mean why kill an animal for fashion? We are technically “stealing” from our furry friends who do us no harm. Faux fur looks just like fur and it will keep you just as warm.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Clothing that doesn’t harm animals. And plant based hair and body products!
April 28th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

April 28th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
there is a wallet from Herbivore Clothing that I don’t own yet, but will by my next paycheck! its really cute, it has a fox on it and it says “fur is f***ed”. And I bought a tote bag from the GreaterGood store, with a little cat on the front, I have gotten so many compliments! and every time you buy something from their site it funds food bowls for animals in shelters.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
With inspiration from Betty Paige Clothing, I must pick a faux white fox stow I saw once that I would love to own. You know the old Hollywood stows with the heads, paws and tails still on them right? How people thought a slaughtered animal wrapped around their necks made them look classy, I’ll never understand, BUT a stuffed animal head, paws and tail… now that shows the ultimate classy broad is a compassionate and playful one for sure! I’ve seen couples on dates where the women is wearing one of those Chinese multi-rabbit tail stows and I have to wonder if she is embarrassing her date or if she will even be getting a second date with him - I hope not!
April 28th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
I love all the clothes at Bettie Page Clothing…..but I think my favorite is the Secretary Pencil dress.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
My favorite cruelty-free fashion item is my homemade t-shirt. Across the front it says “flesh is for zombies, go vegetarian!” and underneath it has a picture of a zombie. On the back across the butt it has the “peta2.com” stencil provided by the website. I wear it every chance I get, not only to support peta, animals, and vegetarianism, but also ZOMBIES!

Is it wrong to say that I love all of their products? I love the hand bags, the clothes, the cosmetics…all of it! I’ve ordered plenty from them before, so a gift certificate would just help me appreciate them (and PETA) even more than I already do!
<3

A few years ago I “took the pledge” to either buy used or make my own clothing and accessories. So I rarely splurge on big-ticket items. But last year to reward myself for surviving another year of school, I bought myself a Mat& Nat bag and it’s the greatest style investment I ever made. Cruelty free and fashionable. Love!
April 28th, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Gosh!! There are about a million people on this comment board. I hope I’m the lucky winner. I’ve been vegetarian & cruelty-free since the tender age of 10 & am easing my way in veganism. Best wishes to all those making the lifestyle change!
April 28th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
It’s incredibly important that we become Veganistas to show that cruelty-free fashion is possibly, gorgeous, sexy, and follows current fashion trends, even retro ones. We should all dress like a group non-vegans want to become part of. Animals’ lives depend on getting the message out in effective ways. So everything I now own is cruelty free and I make it a point for my clothing to be pretty as well.
April 28th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
My favorite item of clothing right now is my faux leopard jacket with a fluffy faux fur collar. It keeps me warm and feeling pretty without having stripped any animals of their fur.

The best thing in the world is to live as a cruelty free example. I never wear animals..I never eat animals…and I am proud to share with anyone how I can take any fashion and copy it with animal friendly material and look and feel so much better. From the top of my head (earth/animal friendly hair products) to the bottom of my feet (earth/animal friendly shoes)I live by example.

I love pleather clothes! I had a really cute lavender trench-style jacket when I was in college! I always got compliments on it and one of my roommates in college borrowed it once when she was going to an 80’s themed party! Alas, it is no more since I wore it until it was falling apart and I had made numerous repairs on it (sewing buttons back on, re-tacking the belt loops, etc).
The Betty Page stuff is really cute! I would love to have a dress or two and the hair bows are sooooo cute!

April 29th, 2009 at 4:53 am
It’s a toss-up between thrift store vintage or vintage-inspired animal-friendly clothing and comfy T-shirts with meaningful messages or unique designs on them. Class and sass without being crass. I’ve always loved Bette Paige’s style, as it was revolutionary for her time, but so classic now, but at the same time, I love modern revolutionary graffiti style inspired clothes.
April 29th, 2009 at 4:56 am

My favorite are black faux patent leather Kork Ease sandals. They’re super comfortable and animal-friendly!
April 29th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Ben Sherman makes the CUTEST vegan skate-type shoes. Surprising, eh? The only problem: my feet are too small! They start at a Men’s 7. Oh well, my boyfriend wins and I lose these shoes. They’re still my favorite!
April 29th, 2009 at 10:23 am
My husband and I LOVE our Simple shoes. Simple Co. is such a great Eco-friendly company because not only do they provide Eco-friendly shoes and clothing, but they also use recycled boxes to ship with. I think the shoes are so comfortable yet trendy and although my husband is not vegan, like myself, he Loves Simple shoes, shirts and bags! I have even bought my godson some “Skippies” which were a hit for everyone! Thank you Simple Shoes!

April 29th, 2009 at 11:39 am
By far the best, most precious, and amazing item of clothing that I own is my Ecuador bracelet. It’s a gift from my Spanish teacher, it’s made of tightly woven threads in los colores de la bandana de Ecuador with the letters “Ecuador” woven into it.
For actual, non accessory clothing, however, it’s my damburger sweatshirt. My boyfriend works and his family owns a local mom n pop style burger joint. It is the only burger joint in town to serve vegan veggie burgers. They actually have 3 different veggie burgers on the menu and 2 are vegan. So now I use my sweatshirt as a way to support vegan restaurant options ^-^.

I love my 1950’s multi-colored plaid blouse. It’s so airy and great for fat days and not-so-fat days. I’m a huge fan of the 1940’s and 50’s. It’s so convenient (now a days) to find retro clothing without the use of animal skins and furs. Bettie Page Clothing is one of my favorite places to shop!

First, I switched to a synthetic leather-style belt. When that wore (after much wear), I decided to go for an elasticized cloth belt with the angled ring clasps. It’s an update of belts I remember from being an early-’80s child, and I am really pleased!
April 30th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
moo shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 30th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
ALL of my t-shirts display an animal rights message. From STOP ANIMAL TESTING to DESIGNER DOGS COME FROM PUPPY MILLS and the list goes on and on. The cool thing about it is that I can wear them to work. I work with the public 8 hours a day and my boss is just fine with it! It’s just another way to get the message out there without having to even say a word.

I am OBSESSED with all things Forever 21, so when I saw how many “faux suede” and “fake leather” goods they created that were not only fashionable but animal-friendly, you can imagine my excitement! Finally, a place with the current and cute but without the cruelty.
Let’s hear it for their faux patent leather heels! A vegan’s gotta look good!
April 30th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
My favorite cruelty-free article of clothing is my “no animal testing” shirt with a cat taking a quiz and then a big X over it. I also love my organic headbands. Lastly, i have a very comfortable organic bra and v-neck t-shirts. Any logical human being knows that no animal should have to die for fashion. That’s just selfish and cruel. Why not be kind-hearted and cruelty-free, when designers like Betty Paige make it so incredibly easy?
April 30th, 2009 at 10:48 pm

May 1st, 2009 at 4:30 am
I think that the greatest clothes of all are the T-shirts. they are very nice, comfrtable, easy to match with other clothes and the main reason is that YOU CAN ALWAYS SPREAD A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE WITH JUST WEARING YOUR T-SHIRT. It’s a great way to tell the world that animals have rights too.
May 1st, 2009 at 8:24 am

I really love that brands like Atticus and Element are producing organic clothes. Although I make an effort to purchase animal friendly products, it is very positive that popular brands are making the transitions to organic and vegan friendly products. I also enjoy brands such as Burts Bees and MAC cosmetics very much. A little extra cost is worth saving the environment.

i’m new to PeTa but not the lifestyle. My favorite article of vegan clothing is my yellow boa , bought off a etsy seller. it makes an outfit fun and i can’t help but feel like a 20’s vintage goddess ,even with all this, the most lovely part of the experience is knowing no bird or other animals were hamed. ^^ Gives an all over fuzzy feeling, that you can be part of something bigger than yourself and helping animals.

Any tee with an animal-friendly message, esp. “Kiss Me, I’m Vegan” - a great way to wear your values on your sleeve!
May 4th, 2009 at 3:50 am
I think that the best fashion of all is showing off your love for our animal friends. This can be done by setting an example for the surrounding community. My fashion example is how cool it is to have rescue animals. I personally have 8 rescue babies of my own. However, I do not think that my 8 kitties believe that they are my fashion accessory but that I am there accessory.
I have to say when I go out shopping and on walks with one of my babies on a cat leash, everyone stops to take a look. It is not everyday that you see a cat love to act as if it were a dog. That is the best fashion of all.
May 4th, 2009 at 8:14 am
I love love love my vegan Olga Black panther western boots by alternative outfitters. I have worn them out….Time to buy another pair. They are so cheap who cant afford cruelty free shoes!!!????

But I also love the Bright Black and White, the Doris, the Tanya, the Gloria…seriously, if I won this, I’d end up spending it and way more! The purses are super cute, too. I wish they sold shoes…leather makes me so sad, and the shoes the models are wearing are adorable!

I love any type of clothing that doesn’t come from an animal. Although I’m not into the look of faux fur, I really like it because for those people who enjoy wearing fur (no idea why..), I say why not just wear faux fur? It looks exactly the same and no animals had to die for it. We’re not cavemen anymore…we don’t need to wear animals!

May 8th, 2009 at 2:15 am
I’ve been decking my dog out in some of the items, but just collars & booties from Eco-Pup Dog Clothing. He only needs the booties because he has sensitive paws - the salt makes them bleed in the winter months & pesticides & fertilizer make ‘em bleed in the summer months. Poor guy.

My favorite all-time favorite animal-friendly fashion product is the faux-fur coats. Since I will be taking class this summer for intellectual growth, I will be wearing and displaying my: (a) t-shirts that I bought from Human Society of the United States (HSUS) promoting pet adoption; (b) my “Be Kind to Everything That Lives” t-shirt from Whales and Friends company; (c) and t-shirt that I bought from AnimalRightstuff.com which says “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated–Gandhi”. That’s the way cool way of showing off my love for all animals this summer!

XOXO

My personal favorite cruelty free fashion item is…anything that is cruelty free and fabulous! While trophy queen purses ride high on my list I can’t say that one cruelty free item I own is better than another. Just the sheer fact that they didn’t require animal testing, parts, or dyes makes it a favorite.
May 14th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I’m not aware of many clothes that are cruelty free, but the make up I wear by Urban Decay is cruelty free and I love buying their products. They’re a bit on the pricey end but the quality is excellent and it’s worth it to pay that amount of money on something I know wasn’t tested on animals, which is a big concern for me.

My favorite animal friendly article of clothing was actually a pair of pleather pants that I owned in the 90’s during the whole Leather phase of the x-generation! I remember leather tight, black leather pants and short, black, leather mini skirts were the thing back then but as I was a hippie in high school I could never conform to the fashion craze until I found pleather that is!
