The following post was originally posted by PETA Files writer, Shawna Flavell.

Delia’s clothing company used to be one of several retailers that sold Ringling Bros. T-shirts.

I say “used to be” because today, the company’s CEO contacted us to say that Delia’s will be pulling the shirts from its Web site, its stores, and its October catalog by this Friday, September 11.

Thanks to the countless concerned people who took the time to write and call the company to ask it to stop promoting Ringling’s cruel treatment of animals.

We hope that you’ll take a second to write to Delia’s and thank it for making the compassionate decision.

by Mylie | August 31, 2009, 2:44 pm

In the past, when compassionate consumers made the switch to cruelty-free cosmetics, it could be challenging to find equally cruelty-free makeup brushes made without animal fur.

Happily, this has changed, and EcoTools is leading the way, delighting shoppers with a line of fabulous fur-free, vegan brushes that can be easily found in a wide range of supermarkets, drugstores, and discount stores.

As the name suggests, EcoTools brushes are also environmentally friendly, made from renewable and recycled resources. As if this weren’t enough, EcoTools donates 1 percent of sales to environmental organizations.

Based on their quality and value, EcoTools brushes were chosen by InStyle as a 2009 Best Beauty Buy, and EcoTools was recognized by PETA with an award for Best Cruelty-Free Brushes in our sixth annual Proggy Awards.

Where to put all those fantastic brushes? No worries—EcoTools has teamed up with actor Alicia Silverstone to produce a selection of gorgeous (and green) bags, available in December, to help you carry your look wherever you go!

Enter to Win One of Four Travel-Ready Product Packages From EcoTools!
Fill out the form below by September 30 and you may win one of four packages of great EcoTools products—including travel sets of brushes and body-care products as well as cellulose facial sponges, a foot pumice stone, and a retractable kabuki brush. Veggie Benefits

The following post was originally posted by PETA Files writer, Alisa Mullins.

Guess what, people: Eating vegetarian food is good for you! If you don’t believe me, just ask the American Dietetic Association (ADA), which had the following to say in its latest position paper on vegetarian diets:

The results of an evidence-based review showed that a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease. Vegetarians also appear to have lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension and type 2 diabetes than nonvegetarians. Furthermore, vegetarians tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates.

Need more proof? Check out the following recent studies:

• According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, people with type 2 diabetes who consumed 40 grams of soy protein isolate per day for nearly two months saw significant reductions in both their LDL cholesterol and the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol. This is just the latest in a long list of studies showing that soy lowers cholesterol—the FDA even permits companies to boast about the cholesterol-lowering effects of soy on their product labels.

• In more soy news, an amino acid found in higher concentrations in soy and other vegetable proteins can lower your blood pressure.

• In addition to clogging your arteries, a low-carb diet makes you stupid—at least that’s the conclusion of a recent study at Tufts University in Boston. Scientists there found that young women performed worse on mental acuity tests after just one week on the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. D’oh—you could’ve aced that chemistry final if only you’d had a V8!

• Speaking of V8, a Mayo Clinic study has found that eating lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables may reduce your risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Bad news for people who hate broccoli—taking antioxidant supplements doesn’t have the same effect.

• A study at Oxford University backed up these findings and even went a bit further, concluding that vegetarians slashed their risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, and other blood cancers by 45 percent.

So, how’s about we mosey on over to VegCooking.com and get started fixing up a mess of cholesterol-lowering, artery-unclogging, cancer risk–slashing, brain-boosting veggies, shall we?

Hitting the Road With Rover

by Mylie | August 10, 2009, 10:22 am

In these last few weeks of summer—in case you’re planning to slap an “I Heart My Mutt” sticker on the family truckster and load up Rover for one last summer romp—the following are some tips to help keep life happy on the holiday road:

Plan ahead. Before pulling out of the driveway, make sure that you consider the trip from Rover’s perspective too. Does he get motion sick? Will he be in a hotel all day while you’re hanging out on the beach? If you decide that Rover would be more comfortable at home, be sure to find a reputable sitter who will keep him happy and safe until you are together again.

Go through our detailed checklist to help make sure that you’ve got everything covered, from bottled water to a first-aid kit for your pooch.

Find ‘pet-friendly’ lodging. Check out our guide to animal-friendly hotels before you go. Knowing which major hotel chains will accommodate your needs will make things run more smoothly than driving up to hotels in the middle of the night with your fingers crossed to ask about their companion animal policy.

Pack a picnic for Rover too with a little help from Mr. Pugsly and Mr. Barky.

Bring along a CD that will make Rover happy and potentially inspire a sing-a-long.

Read more of our tips before hitting the road, and have a safe and fun trip!

Win a Cruelty-Free Prize Pack From method!

by Mylie | July 31, 2009, 10:37 am

Although the 21st century is still young, it has already seen method grow from a scrappy startup into a multimillion-dollar company whose eye-catching cleaning products have become nearly ubiquitous on the shelves of supermarkets and department stores. But method’s products are far more than just pretty packaging—they’re also safe, effective, environmentally friendly, and cruelty-free.

Founded in 2000 by childhood friends Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry (PETA’s 2006 “Persons of the Year”), method has revolutionized the cleaning products market by thinking outside the box—or rather the (recyclable) bottle, which may be shaped like a bowling pin or an hourglass. The product inside is equally innovative, made from natural and biodegradable ingredients and free of toxins that could harm you or your family members—including Fluffy or Fido.

Best of all, since method has assured PETA that it avoids both animal testing and animal-derived ingredients, you can enjoy the company’s great products knowing that they’ll keep your conscience as clean as your home!

Enter to Win a method Prize Package!
Fill out the form below by August 26 and you may win one of five prize packages with a selection of magnificent method cleaning products—including dish soaps, hand washes, all-surface cleaners, tub and tile wipes, and an assortment of specialty surface cleaners! We will let you know if you are a winner by August 31.

This contest has ended.

A Vegetable Garden on My Back Porch

The following is a post by Sandy Powers, provided by DivineCaroline.

Recently, I was a guest on Cory Farley’s radio show on KBZZ in Reno, Nevada, to talk about my vegetable garden growing on my back porch. It’s called “square foot gardening.” Not as ambitious as our First Lady’s gardening efforts but still will harvest a load of vegetables.

You begin with two 8×12 pieces of untreated lumber. You don’t want chemicals to leach into the soil. Cut in half. If you ask, the lumber business will probably do it for you. Now you have four pieces of wood, each 4×4, 12 inches width. Nail the pieces together to form a square—that’s your four square planting box. Set on a 4×4 sheet of plywood that you drilled three holes in for drainage. Set the planting box where you want to grow your vegetables. Fill with a mixture of topsoil and organic potting soil.

Before I start planting, I line three pieces of string down and three pieces of string across to divide the planting into 16 squares. I now begin to plant: tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, green peas, carrots, and broccoli. I plant these vegetables because, not only are they my favorite vegetables, but I harvest so many that I freeze what I don’t eat. I am saving money by eating vegetables long after the growing season is over.

I freeze the tomatoes whole, uncooked, to use in recipes later. The bell peppers—green, yellow, and red—I wash, core, and freeze uncooked. The others I blanch in boiling water for a few minutes, and then freeze.

It really is so easy. Give square foot gardening a try. You’re not only saving money, but you’re eating the tastiest vegetables possible.

Ever Pure: The Vegan Line by L’Oreal

Cruelty-free” and “vegan” are not adjectives that typically pop into the minds of compassionate shoppers when they think of L’Oreal, as the company has yet to sign PETA’s statement of assurance that it will never test new ingredients on animals. However, things seem to be changing with the cosmetics giant as it realizes that more and more caring consumers want only bunny-approved products in their medicine cabinets.

Introducing the Ever Pure hair-care line by L’Oreal. With “100% Vegan” emblazoned on the front, these botanical, sulfate-free products come in formulas for every hair type: whether you need to tame frizzies, moisturize dry hair, or infuse volume in fine tresses. L’Oreal indicates on the back of its Ever Pure products that they are not tested on animals.

We are thrilled to see that L’Oreal is focusing on vegan products and hope that it will make the compassionate decision to enact a cruelty-free policy that encompasses all its products. Please take a moment to write to L’Oreal to thank it for marketing products that compassionate people want. Politely ask the company to apply Ever Pure’s cruelty-free philosophy to all its products by signing PETA’s statement of assurance.
